Welcome to our second installation of the “Scoop”! In our “Did You Know” section we’re going to tell you a little bit about Joseph Pilates and Romana Kryzanowska.

This month we’re introducing the “Exercise of the Month” to our newsletter. Not surprisingly we’re going to start at the beginning with “The Hundred.”

Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1883. He spent his entire life studying movement and the human body. He has been called a “genius of the human body.”

During WWI, Pilates was living in England and was interned as an “alien enemy” at a work camp. It is there that he began to develop his method (what is today called True Pilates) of physical conditioning, which he originally called “The Art of Contrology.” Contrology or, as it is known today, True Pilates is a system of exercises that tone, stretch and strengthen the muscles. It is a total body workout that improves posture, flexibility and brings balance to the muscles. I believe it is the best total body workout there is. In his books, Return to Life Through Contrology and Your Health, which were published in the 1930s and 1940s, Pilates described his method as the “complete control of body, mind and spirit.” He also prophetically stated that his method is “built upon scientific principles so true, sound and unique that the science and art of Contrology will live forever.” Indeed it has.

Pilates eventually emigrated to the United States and with his wife, Clara, opened his studio in New York City. It is there that Romana Kryzanowska, Joseph Pilates’ world- renowned protege, met and began her lifelong alliance with Joseph Pilates. Romana and her daughter, Sari, were my teachers. Upon Joseph Pilates’ death in 1967 Romana vowed to continue his life’s work and to keep the method pure to his original teachings and intentions.

The Hundred

The Hundred is the first exercise you do on the mat. It is a breathing and endurance exercise and sets the tone of your workout. The hundred delivers oxygen-rich blood to the muscles, strengthens the abdominals and builds endurance. Watch our client, Torey, demonstrate the Hundred! Click on the link and take a look!

The Studio

This month we’re pleased to present a video tour of our studio (click on the link to watch!) The studio was designed with the student in mind. We’ve created a warm and private space for our clients with earth tones and high ceilings. Our lighting was specifically designed so that it would be soft on the eyes as you work out. Touchstone Pilates is fully equipped with Gratz-Pilates apparatus. Gratz is the original manufacturer of Pilates apparatus and is the only apparatus on the market that is built based upon Joseph Pilates’ original designs and specifications. We believe it is the best apparatus on the market, and, like True Pilates, these apparatus designs have withstood the test of time.
